From my own historical research on the relationship between language and architecture in early modern Italy, I came to realise during the conference that the concept of the urban commons offers a potentially new framework to rethink the traditions of the civic realm in cities denuded of places for positive civic participation. Many of the papers presented were incisive and thought-provoking, prompting fundamental reviews about the role of architecture and urban design in an age of ecological, socio-political and economic crises.
