The origin of novel genes can be from older genes or from random sequences in a process called "de novo gene birth". The functions and integration of these de novo genes into cellular systems are not well understood. We identified functional proteins from a library of 100 million random proteins
...
that helped E. coli survive against toxins or bacterial viruses. Through genetic and biochemical analysis, we found that these random proteins integrate into existing cellular pathways to protect cells from threats. This research provides insight into how de novo gene birth can produce beneficial proteins for cells evolving under stress.
