How do we balance the science, art, and craft of teaching reading? We bring a developmental– and classroom-based perspective to the “Science of .. Read more Reading.” We begin by demonstrating that it is not possible to teach beginning reading effectively without attention to writing as well: Research shows that reading and writing advance together as two faces of the same knowledge coin. For emergent and beginning readers and writers, the development of phonemic awareness, letter-sound knowledge, fluency, and vocabulary are developmentally intertwined. The art and craft of teaching literacy involve understanding this complexity and applying it in the moment with learners. This edWebinar will be of interest to K-5 teachers, literacy coaches, and curriculum leaders. There will be time for questions at the end of the presentation.
