Hinkley Point C is the first new nuclear power station to be constructed in the UK for a generation and will be capable of generating 7% of the UK’s energy needs. The complex and stringent design requirements for these seismically qualified structures lead to very congested and complex reinforcement details. Working alongside the main civil work contractor, BYLOR, Atkins have been able to implement a number of digital strategies that have improved the overall productivity of the design and construction. Atkins have developed an in-house design software, ContourRC, to automatically post process the finite element results to produce an optimised design, the use of 3D reinforcement models then allows the design and construction requirements to be visualised, assessed and validated in a 3D environment.
