Callers receive confidential advice and guidance on how to report serious incidents about voluntary organisations, including whether a concern needs .. Read more to be raised with the Commission. The introduction of a whistleblowing hotline comes at a time when safeguarding in the voluntary sector is becoming an increasingly widespread concern, with a 38% increase in incidents reported by charities from 2018-2019, compared to 2017-2018, and 48% of whistleblowing concerns received by the Charity Commission in 2018-2019 relating to safeguarding concerns. In addition to protecting individuals involved in the activities of charities, there are also wider concerns surrounding the adherence of staff and volunteers to safeguarding frameworks, with regulatory compliance cases reported to the Commission rising by nearly 20% between 2008 and 2017. Ongoing safeguarding concerns in charities also has a further impact on the voluntary sector by affecting levels of public trust in the sector, with 62% of respondents in the Commission’s 2018 public trust in charities report citing recent news stories as to why their trust in charities has decreased. This conference will analyse the achievements since Government Events’s 2019 conference on safeguarding in the voluntary sector. It will also provide attendees with an invaluable opportunity to hear the latest initiatives from charities and regulatory bodies in developing safeguarding policies and strategies, as well as reflect on future improvements to be made.
