According to the Coroners Court of Victoria, 117 Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islanders lost their lives by suicide between January 2009 to April 2020 in Victoria – a state with 0.8% Indigenous population. This is double the suicide rate of the state’s non-Indigenous population over the past decade. The Coroners Court’s report also found that two-thirds of Indigenous people experienced abuse before their death, a fourth were victims of bullying and 82% experienced substance use or misuse – all significantly higher figures than for non-Indigenous people.
