The Emergency Laparotomy conference is a significant online event organized by the Royal Society of Medicine, focusing on enhancing patient survival rates through a multidisciplinary approach in emergency laparotomy procedures. The conference will highlight the insights gained from the National Emergency Laparotomy Audit (NELA), which has been instrumental since its ... inception in 2012 in guiding clinicians to optimize care for critically ill patients undergoing emergency laparotomy. By utilizing data from hospitals across the UK, NELA has been successful in identifying key trends and best practices that contribute to improved patient outcomes.

Attendees of this informative webinar will have the opportunity to gain in-depth knowledge about various aspects of emergency laparotomy care. The agenda includes a series of presentations from leading clinicians in the field. The event will begin with a welcome and introduction by Dr. J Bernard Liban, a Consultant Anaesthetist at St George’s University Hospital, who also serves as the President of the Section of Anaesthesia. Following this, Professor Carol Peden, a Professor of Anesthesiology and Critical Care at the University of Pennsylvania, will present 'NELA 13 years on,' providing insights into the longitudinal development of the audit.

Ms. Lyndsay Pearce, a Consultant Colorectal Surgeon and NELA Chair, will offer an overview and surgical perspective on the current landscape of emergency laparotomy. Dr. Sally Anne Wilson, a Consultant in Emergency Medicine and ED NELA Lead at Airedale NHS Foundation Trust, will discuss the current emergency department guidelines that are crucial for managing patients requiring emergency laparotomy. Additionally, Dr. Huw Roach, a Consultant Radiologist at University Hospitals Bristol and NELA Radiology Lead, will address the role of radiology in the diagnostic pathway for these patients. The agenda will conclude with a presentation on the anaesthetic perspective by a speaker to be confirmed, ensuring a comprehensive overview of the critical aspects of emergency laparotomy care. This webinar promises to be a valuable educational experience for healthcare professionals interested in enhancing their understanding and skills related to this vital surgical procedure.
