The event titled 'Biobased Polymer Foam Pattern for Lost Foam Casting' is an online workshop and conference organized by the American Foundry Society Inc. This session will delve into the innovative advancements in the lost foam casting process, which traditionally relied on expanded polystyrene (EPS) as the pattern material. Given

the environmental concerns associated with EPS, which is derived from petroleum and has a significant carbon footprint, this event will focus on a novel solution using expandable polylactic acid (EPLA) foam molding beads sourced from sustainable biological materials.
Participants will learn about the laboratory evaluations conducted on bio-based foam patterns to assess their efficacy in replacing EPS as a pattern material in lost foam casting. The results indicate that EPLA materials not only avoid the generation of hazardous air pollutants (HAPs) and carcinogens but also successfully yield lost foam castings in both aluminum and gray cast iron, without necessitating modifications to the existing casting process. This insightful webinar will start at 1 p.m. and is exclusively available to AFS members.
