He was born and raised in Utah and is a fourth-generation graduate of the U. His great-grandfather was in the university's first class. Both his grandfather and father continued the tradition, and his mother was a U of U cheerleader. His wife, Jana, also graduated from the University of Utah. Their three out of four children have graduated from the U, while the fourth is currently in his sophomore year.
