Adrenée Glover Freeman Lecture with Daphne Brooks

The WGST department will host Dr. Daphne Brooks as keynote speaker for the annual Adrenée Glover Freeman Lecture. The lecture, titled "Kitchen Insurrections: Porgy & Bess, Mamba’s Daughters, Black Women Musicians & the End of an Era/Error," explores the intersection of modern music-making, Broadway, and the politics of race, gender, and class. It delves into the battle between Black women artists and white composers, librettists, novelists, and cultural impresarios, highlighting the dynamics of collaboration and competition in creative labor and innovation.
