Writing centers have the ability to break clichés and build bridges, challenging outdated perceptions. They have long worked to challenge clichés, including those famously challenged by Stephen North, while also breaking new ones. Similarly, writing centers have worked against clichés that emerged from their efforts to build bridges, such as the idea that they only uphold the prominence of standard written English. Pittsburgh, too, has broken clichés, defying the notion that it is a polluted, industrial town.
