Read more the divergence of sanctions among Member States, the 2017 PIF Directive seeks to harmonise the definitions, sanctions and prescription periods of the offences affecting the Union’s financial interests. Such a minimal harmonisation would also affect the effectiveness of investigations and prosecutions by the European Public Prosecutor’s Office (EPPO), considering that its competence is defined by reference to the PIF Directive and, therefore, to the different national legislations implementing it.
