The use of cross-laminated timber (CLT) for structural floor and roof panels has seen incredible growth in the US over the past decade. However, .. Read more until now, CLT had not been codified for use as part of a seismic or wind force-resisting system—either as a diaphragm or shear wall. As a result, CLT diaphragms have had to be approved through alternative means or include a structural topping, such as a layer of wood structural panels or concrete. This webinar will introduce new provisions for CLT diaphragm design that will be included in the American Wood Council’s 2021 Special Design Provisions for Wind and Seismic (SDPWS), which will be the code-referenced standard for guidance on CLT diaphragms. Following a discussion of the new SDPWS provisions, CLT diaphragm detailing options and design examples will be presented to demonstrate practical design techniques along with structural detailing challenges and solutions. His responsibilities include planning of structural research and working with AWC’s consensus standards committee to update the National Design Specification® for Wood Construction (NDS®), Wood Frame Construction Manual (WFCM), and Special Design Provisions for Wind and Seismic (SDPWS).
