Summary:New watershed and statewide nutrient regulations prompted the City of Monticello, Illinois, to update its wastewater treatment plant (WWTP). .. Read more Monticello began a project in 2011 to convert the plant into a Biological Nutrient Removal (BNR) operation. To maximize the operational flexibility, an anaerobic selector will be built upstream of the oxidation ditches. The anaerobic selector will allow the system to run in multiple modes of biological nutrient removal. We will discuss how an oxidation ditch can be used to maximize operational flexibility for nutrient removal, with emphasis placed on the actual performance data obtained while operating at various BNR configurations, solids retention time, and weather.
