As the People’s Republic of China celebrates its 71st anniversary, it is a moment to take a closer look at China’s efforts to reshape the world, with one of the biggest infrastructure initiatives the world has ever seen. It’s called the New Silk Road, and since it launched in 2013, most of the world’s countries have signed on to be part of it. The translation from Chinese is the Belt & Road–a belt of land routes, and a Maritime Silk Road of sea routes. It’s part of what he calls the China Dream. Starting September 9th leading up to Election Day on November 3rd, World Affairs is holding a series of virtual conversations on key issues affecting our democracy like housing, healthcare, disinformation, and the role of media, along with key global policy challenges like climate change, the changing US role in the world, and our relations with China, Russia, and countries in the Middle East.
