The contemporary practice of Kampo still bases itself on this method of “Matching Formula and Pattern” so that each formula pattern (方証 Ho .. Read more Sho/Fang Zheng) acts itself as the differential diagnosis for the patient. The study and practice of Kampo thus focuses entirely on grasping above all the “story” unique to each formula unit expressed in terms of signs and symptoms including a pulse, tongue and abdomen finding in each case and matching it with the patient’s presentation directly. The role of abstract logic in determining theoretical pattern differentiations based on organ disharmony is downplayed in favor of seeking the perfect match between the patient’s “pattern” (証 Sho/Zheng) and that of the formula that most directly corresponds to it. This webinar will explore this process in detail and offer case examples of how it works in practice.
