The Indian Healthcare system is largely led by the private sectorwith the government being a key investor rather than a caretaker. This hasresulted in numerous challenges for the healthcare sector including negligibleinvestment in research & development, regulatory hindrances in drug testingand patent registration, unaffordable medication for the majority of thepopulation, and a business-first care model.

 

Recently, Kerala has introduced a comprehensive healthcare policycatering to the needs of the state. From fostering primary care facilities toeducating people on preventive care, the patient-centric policy places theState’s healthcare sector in line with many of the world’s developed economies.Here we look at what needs to happen to ensure the policy and vision getsuccessfully fulfilled:

  • Vision toimplementation: how will the policy be implemented on ground? What levels ofpartnerships and approaches are required to ensure compliance at all levels?

  • Does the policycover provide care and accessibility for all? How is the State policy differentfrom the Centre’s healthcare policy? What can be improved?
