A great couple of days at the University of Wollongong, alongside a brilliant and inspired cast brought together by Phil Orchard, discussing accountability for the international crime of forced displacement. My paper and presentation examined how forced displacement interacts with genocide. I draw on numerous historical genocides to articulate four ways in which genocidal violence and forced displacement relate, and show how each have taken place in the context of Gaza. More soon.

🚀 Excited to share that our latest paper is now available on arXiv!I’m also thrilled that this work was accepted as a Spotlight Talk at the 2026 Physics & AI (PAI) Conference at Stanford University, where I had the opportunity to present our findings and discuss them with researchers working at the intersection of AI and the physical sciences. The project started with a simple question:What actually makes a good tokenizer for a scientific foundation model?Intuitively, you’d expect the tokenizer with the best image reconstruction to also produce the best scientific representations. But after benchmarking four tokenization strategies—Linear, MLP, VQ-VAE, and our flow-based tokenizer, JetFormer—we found that the answer is much more nuanced. One of our main findings is that better image reconstruction does not necessarily translate into better downstream scientific performance...🌌Even more interesting, we find that JetFormer achieves the highest reconstruction fidelity while preserving rich physical information. Yet a significant portion of that information remains inaccessible to conventional Linear and MLP probes! To me, that’s perhaps the most exciting result of this work. It raises a bigger question than the one we started with:How much scientific knowledge are today’s foundation models already learning that our current evaluation methods simply fail to measure? 🤔📄 Paper: https://lnkd.in/gNB2MQ36I’m grateful to the incredible AstroAI team at Harvard, especially Mike Smith , whose mentorship was instrumental to this work. Thanks as well to my advisors, Bahram Mobasher and Juan Rafael Martínez Galarza, and to all my co-authors for their collaboration, support, and for making this such a rewarding experience.📸 Photo credit: David Gonzales / Stanford HAI (@gonzalesphoto)#ArtificialIntelligence #FoundationModels #MachineLearning #ScientificAI #AstroAI #PhysicsAI #RepresentationLearning #Transformers #StanfordHAI

Interesting paper on a topic that is important. Ag emmissons must be better understood and the investment in understanding this is needed if farmers are to have a competitive advantage and an accurate understanding of their emissions AND sequestration. Not many industries get the opportunity Ag has to reduce emissions whilst also sequestering carbon into agricultural soils.

The clients who feel calm this EOFY didn't just do their tax. They planned. 📊But here's the bit most people skip 👇→ Tax planning tells you what happened→ Real planning tells you where you're goingTake 5 minutes today, grab a piece of paper and answer...readmore 4 questions:→ Where do I want this business in 12 months? → What's something that annoys you that you want to fix in the next 12 months? → Who are the people in it? → What's the work I actually want to be doing? Then stick it on your office wall. Somewhere you'll see it every single day. That little bit of awareness keeps your mind focused all year. For extra accountability send me a picture and I'll share my thoughts. Sometimes improving your business can be such a small step. What's the one thing you want different in your business this new financial year?#EOFY #SmallBusinessAustralia #BusinessPlanning #BusinessGrowth #BrisbaneBusinessreadless

Week 3 Update Why I rejected a model with AUC of 0.91 in OOS, and what the textbooks did not teach meSome mountains you climb. Some you have to fall off, on purpose, so you are free to climb the one that actually matters.A 0.91 AUC, out-of-sample. On...readmore paper, a summit. I walked back down. Here is what the climb taught me that the textbooks did not.1. A high score says the model can separate. It does not say you can act on the separation. Spotting a setup is not the same as knowing when to exit, how much to size, or whether it survives costs. The model could rank beautifully and still make nothing.2. Most of that AUC was the easy negatives. When your no examples are random points, almost anything looks brilliant beside them. The moment I made the negatives realistic, the look-alikes a careful eye has to work to reject, the edge shrank. The score was measuring the contrast I had handed it, not the skill I was hoping for.3. The base rate was doing the climbing for me. In a bull market, things bounce. Predicting what mostly happens anyway is not insight, it is gravity. Beating random is a low bar when random already wins most of the time. The honest benchmark is the achievable ceiling and buy-and-hold, not a coin flip.4. Perception is not profit. The model saw the pattern. That was never the question. The question was whether seeing it changes the outcome, and a classification score has nothing to say about that. That 0.91 was a smaller mountain. Real-looking, satisfying to stand on, and the wrong peak. Staying there would have felt like progress. Climbing down was the progress. The discipline I carry now: assume the summit is false until out-of-sample, cost-aware, honestly-benchmarked evidence says otherwise. Rejecting the 0.91 was not pessimism. It was choosing the harder mountain over the flattering one.Sometimes you have to fall off the smaller mountains to climb the one worth climbing. Perhaps.Which smaller mountain did you have to come down from beforereadless

Open concept looks amazing on paper. But real life gets loud.Yesterday I was showing a gorgeous new construction home here in Central New York.Beautiful finishes.Tons of natural light.Big open layout. The buyers walked through and loved it.And I get it...readmore .Open concept photographs well.It feels spacious. You can see everything. But here’s the thing I always think about when I walk through these homes. How does this actually live five years from now?Because if you have kids, teenagers, dogs, people working from home, someone watching TV, someone cooking, someone on the phone, and someone else living their best life upstairs…That beautiful open space can turn into one giant echo chamber.I told these buyers they may want to come back with their kids before writing the contract.Because I can already picture the phone call a few years from now.“Gwenn, do you know anyone who can add insulation, sound deadening, or maybe put up a wall?”Open concept is a yes for light, flow, and entertaining. But it is not always a yes for noise, privacy, or everyday family life.So when you’re touring homes, don’t just ask yourself how it looks.Ask yourself how it lives.Because pretty matters. But practical matters more. What do you think? Are you team open concept or team give-me-a-wall?Gwenn McDonaldLic. #10491209163#GwennMcDonald #SyracuseRealEstate #CentralNewYorkRealEstate #CNYRealEstate #NewConstructionHomesreadless
