Read more Summit is the state’s premier conference for professionals and volunteers involved in historic preservation. The 2021 summit’s theme, “The Trail Ahead,” looks two ways at once: back to Council Bluffs’ colorful history as a trailhead for explorers and settlers, and forward to a bright future where Iowa communities use their history to create a unique sense of place and shared identity. The three-day program starts Thursday with some inspiration – an awards ceremony to honor SHPO’s Preservation Projects of Merit and Preservation Iowa’s “Preservation At Its Best” – and wraps up Saturday with a round of how-to sessions specially designed for Iowans who work or volunteer at local historical societies and history museums across the state. The summit is a coordinated effort of the Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs’ State Historic Preservation Office, City of Council Bluffs, Council Bluffs Historic Preservation Commission, Pottawattamie Arts, Culture and Entertainment (PACE), Historical Society of Pottawattamie County and Preservation Iowa. It is funded in part with federal funds from the National Park Service, U. S. Department of the Interior. In 2020, Iowa’s premier statewide annual conference for historic-preservation professionals and volunteers was shifted to being entirely online, with a mix of live and pre-recorded sessions, virtual tours and an online awards ceremony to celebrate outstanding preservation projects across Iowa.
