"Assessing the economics and suitability of SMRs and ARs across a variety of applications"
As the world's population grows, coupled with the inextricable link between electrification and quality of life, electricity is needed globally, to support existing and future needs. If the nations of the world are to meet their climate change commitments, the provision of electricity must be done in a manner that supports a clean growth agenda, as the world becomes more dependent on stable electricity. Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) and Advanced Reactors (ARs) are uniquely positioned to meet current and future needs of advanced society. SMR and Advanced Reactors development will be driven by the need for electrification to support development, climate change and clean energy policies, and innovative applications as well as the lower aggregate cost of the units, which will make such technology more accessible to a wider group of nations.

  • Applications for SMRs and Advanced Reactors to promote clean growth
  • Mining applications
  • Desalination applications
  • Financing SMRs and Advanced Reactors
  • Emerging countries considering nuclear power briefing

Thu, 06 Feb 10:45 AM - 12:45 PMSeeking SMR Alpha - The Energy Park Model Session

How might SMRs play a role in mixed-mode energy gateways for economic, technological and societal value in rapidly growing nations?

  • Investment in SMR technology remains contentious
  • Comparisons against cheaper forms of on or off-grid low-carbon generation will continue to be drawn, and stood up on their own. SMRs may struggle to find scale, particularly in isolated deployments
  • The unique inherent characteristics of SMRs/AMRs need to be exploited
  • Well-designed mixed-mode energy parks, with SMRs and micro-reactors at their heart may be the key to unlocking wide-ranging value to investors, national industrial value chains and consumers alike
  • The approach may allow for one-off deployments to still provide net positive returns
  • This talk will consider what is being done to explore and realise this model and how the role of the traditional nuclear and developer may need to change to make it work
James Harris, Chief Executive Officer, Turner Harris
