The Annual Conference on Equity in Education & Society is poised to be a significant gathering aimed at addressing the critical issues surrounding equity in educational settings. This important event will take place at London Metropolitan University in the vibrant city of London, United Kingdom. It will feature notable presentations
...
from leading experts in the field, including Liselle, an Associate Professor in Performance at the University of East London, and Dr. Syra Shakir, an Associate Professor in Learning and Teaching.
Liselle's presentation, titled 'Disrupting Ableist Hierarchies: Breaking the Code of Silence,' will delve into the concept of ableism as a pervasive system that categorizes and ranks individuals based on arbitrary norms of intelligence and productivity. Drawing on her own experiences as a neurodivergent practitioner, Liselle challenges the institutional structures that perpetuate ableist narratives. She employs a radical crip, queer, and feminist approach to co-create inclusive performance projects that center on the lived experiences of marginalized communities. Through an auto-ethnographic lens, she aims to unpack her own struggles and strengths, advocating for a redefined understanding of disability that foregrounds the relational aspects of power and recognition.
Dr. Syra Shakir will present 'Navigating the Margins: Intersectional Leadership, Racialised Labour, and the Politics of Belonging.' Her talk will examine the constraints and practices of intersectional leadership within UK higher education, particularly from the perspective of a racialized woman equity leader. Utilizing Critical Race Theory and Black feminist thought, Syra will explore the intersectionality of race, gender, and class, revealing how these forces shape the experiences of racialized individuals in academic settings. She will introduce a Relational, Intersectional Leadership Model that emphasizes equity practice and accountability, advocating for transformative approaches that move beyond mere compliance towards genuine structural change. Her insights will challenge participants to rethink leadership in terms of justice, solidarity, and epistemic equity.
This conference not only provides a platform for thought-provoking discussions but also invites engagement from participants who are interested in the themes of equity and social justice in education. Attendees will have the opportunity to connect with other educators, activists, and researchers who are committed to fostering an inclusive and equitable educational landscape. Furthermore, there is an invitation for advertisers and stall holders to participate, contributing to the event's collaborative environment. The conference promises to be an enriching experience for all involved, with a powerful lineup of speakers and an agenda that addresses pressing issues in the realm of education and society.
