The Social Policy Association (SPA) Conference is a premier international academic event that serves as a vital platform for the UK and global social policy community to share contemporary research and insights. This gathering attracts a diverse group of several hundred delegates, including researchers, educators, students, and practitioners of social
...
policy from both the UK and abroad. The conference aims to foster a collaborative environment where participants can engage in rigorous debates, interdisciplinary discussions, and collaborative inquiries. This year, the conference will be hosted at the Creative Campus of Liverpool Hope University, creating a unique space for scholars, practitioners, and activists to interrogate the structures of inequality and articulate visions of justice, ultimately considering pathways toward sustainable systemic change.
The conference will feature an exceptional lineup of keynote speakers from various fields, including academia, public health, politics, and the third sector. Notable speakers include Guy Standing, a Professorial Research Associate at SOAS University of London and honorary co-president of the Basic Income Earth Network; Baroness Ruth Lister, CBE, Emeritus Professor of Social Policy at Loughborough University; Professor Matthew Ashton, Director of Public Health at Liverpool City Council; Ian Byrne MP, who serves as the Parliamentary lead for The Right To Food Campaign; and Claire Donovan, Director of End Furniture Poverty. These influential figures will guide discussions aimed at examining how hope, resistance, and radical transformation can reshape the future toward a more equitable society.
In addition to the keynote addresses, the conference will include a rich program of panels and discussions. One such panel is focused on the theme 'Can progressive social policies flourish in an era of fracturing solidarities?', jointly held with the East Asian Social Policy Research Network (EASP). Other past conferences have highlighted critical issues such as rising inequalities and poverty, fair work and employment futures, and inter-generational challenges, featuring prominent speakers like Professor Catherine Needham, Baron Prem Sikka, and Professor Danny Dorling. The SPA Conference not only serves as a forum for academic discourse but also engages with the pressing social issues of our time, making it an essential event for those committed to advancing social policy and promoting social justice across the globe.
